On some pieces in the collection, Marlies uses stencils to decorate them. That's the case with this one as well. The white clay becomes visible under the opaque layer of purple engobe and forms the pattern. Placing the bowl a-symetrically on the plate creates a beautiful effect. There is also a lot going on with the edges of the bowl and plate:
